When you are knitting with many different colours, what do you do to untangle the wool? Each row? Or do you put the skeins in a certain order? Do you have a special trick?

I have never knitted with many colours at once, therefore I can't say anything. And after reading some comments about having a chaos I won't do that soon.

We have been on Juist, doing nothing.
It was nice and sunny with very comfortable temperatures.
I'm still not able to think.

on my needles. At the moment knitting is slowly.

The pattern is easy to knit. But it looks a bit wavier then in the instruction. I wonder if it's caused by my knitting-technique or if the socks in the instruction have been ironed. Hope it will be good when they are worn.
Actually I like it more when the pattern runs over the whole sock. But I thought it could perhaps be a bit uncomfortable in shoes.

I think the colour fits to the birthday boy and I like the socks, too.
Next week my son and I are invited to the birthday party and I'm going to help my friend to cope with the little twelve (!) male guests.

Juist is wonderful, such a perfect white beach.

So I did not have the time to praise my wool-fairy and my wool-princess. They are both very nice. I'm really lucky - when I'm thinking of my one skein pal anyhow.

My first one skein secret pal exchange

package arrived on Monday.

My pal must be crazy. Lovingly wrapped there was one skein of green Kidsilk Haze in the colour 'Jelly'. Wonderful soft. A wool that has to be admired. Actually you should only receive one skein, but my pal suffered from a intoxication of green colours. :) Cooling gel for the eyes, bathing balls for the feet, wild garlic and chocolate, which has already been eaten.

Today on a Thursday. Yesterday evening I met my two friends A. and A. in a restaurant. It wasn't a good choice. Because of the soccer-championship it was very empty. And the host obviously thought that we would save the day. They looked quite angrily when we 'only' ordered pizza and salad. Very stupid and very impolite.
But we had a nice chat anyhow.

No, I'm knitting steadily. The time for knitting is reduced anyway, as you are more outside and on the way during the summer. Sitting in the garden and knitting can be very nice.

Well, there are two possibilities.
Either the Oz is sleeping or he is working on our music blogs.
That's fine as it can be easily combined with knitting.
When we are surging for new music for the Aspirant I'm knitting. When we are sitting in the Chartbreaker conference I'm knitting, too. Since yesterday we have got the Beatfinder, there will surely be the possibility for knitting as well.

Last Wednesday at the concert. The red spots of the lightshow before Korn appeared on stage.

Yes, I made it. I survived the Korn concert.

Korn - it was really heavy. And it was not only Korn at all.
Flyleaf with a very capricious singer was quite good.

Hatebreed made the the audience wild but was too loud for my tiny ears. And the sound was too equable.

And the sound-technique of the Bullets was really bad. There was no Light show, so it seemed to be a little narcotic. In autumn they will be back in Germany. Hope the sound will be better then.

When the microphone rack entered the stage the audience was electrified. And even more when it was exposed.

And then Korn appeared - at 23 h! - on stage. Loud and powerful. The basses made the stomach vibrate. The sound - a mixture of metal and HipHop - what is it? In any case unique. Bizarre, stamping shaman music. Coool.

The socks

The knitting was fun; the socks are a present. As they are thick, they will surely be used on the sofa. Therefore I thought I could pimp them up a little. For example, with a crochet butterfly, or a frog, or a fairy - somthing like that. I still have to think about it.
The next project will be some socks for a friend's son who will have birthday this month. I can write this down because he is still too small for reading. *hehe* And I don't think that it will be a great pleasure for him to receive socks. Nevermind, I found a victim, he will have to stand it.
Uahh, this evening there will be the Korn concert, I will have to stand this, too.

Sometimes it's an advantage to live in megalopolis.
For example, if you have to buy some special music gadgets for Oz you only have to go to the next big city. You will find it somewhere in the area.
So today I was on my way between Essen and Dortmund in the brigth sunshine.

Uh, the speed of 80 km/h on the freeeway makes you sleepy. You can do nothing except of driving. What a waste of time. But you can have a look around. And I asked myself how an foreigner would see our cities. It's not a grey wasteland - everything is green so that even the potholes and the old buildings seem to be picutresque. If that's the same for foreign eyes?

Rosenstolz

Last Wednesday we have been to the Rosenstolz concert in the Grugahalle. Unfortunately I only had my mobile phone to take some pictures, the photos are not that good.

It was great. Even the Oz survived. :)
The band knew how to handle with the audience. Most of the songs were assisted by the crowd.

The show took 2 1/2 hours - respect. The audience was a wild mix of singing punks, families with their children and the generation 50+ - funny.
That will surely be different next week at the Korn concert. Yesterday I exercised with watching Korn live on MTV - Rock am Ring. And I was surprised that it was not as bad as imagined. But it will be different standig in a big hall surrounded by the sound.

On Saturday we have been to the Sevens. That's a big shopping mall in Düsseldorf near the 'Kö'. The oval architecture reminds of extraterrestrial starships.

And it was really a battle, a fight for a parking place, for a place in the elevator, usually I do not like these full shops on a Saturday.

Mario Smash Football is a fine little game to prepare yourself for the soccer championship next month. But also the return game today was not satisfying for Oz. *hehe* Unfortunately it's not skill but luck, so I must hurry up with being glad - it won' t last long.

Who has been buying shoes for a 12 year old teenie?
We have to point out: buying shoes is always difficult.
But today we were looking for shoes for the schooltrip of my daughter J. next week.
The teacher told us that there would only be forrest and slush and J. said that she would not wear her fantastic new shoes there. So we were looking for cheap shoes for the slush which also had to be pretty.
We went through the whole city and found nothing, not even expensive new shoes.
Then J. had the idea to ask in the shop where we bought the fantastic shoes she is wearing now. We had already been there and had not seen them but perhaps there could be a lonely pair in the stock. I was not convinced but desperate so we tried it.
We asked the shop assistant for the shoes, she shook her head but went into the stock and came back with these shoes. Unbelievable - a bargain.

Yesterday evening I met my dear friends A. and A. again. We went to the Trüffel da Diego and had a tasty dinner:

Pasta with salmon. We were placed in the Vinothek and it was very cozy - surrounded by shelves full of vine that we could nocht drink unfortunately. Apart from that, I can't drink much anyway.

What was your worst knitting disaster?

Och, I have not experienced a real disaster so far.
The last unfinished project was disposed in an attack of consequence.
But I can remember a bad experience. When I tried to knit socks again a few years ago I had forgotten how to knit the heel and I really had to look into the pattern again. And then my little son came along and pulled out the needles. That was frustrating.
And then - last week - a disaster as well.
The last week I was very sad. I had to force myself to do something otherwise I would have been only sitting around staring at the walls. Horrible. And I dicovered that knitting does not help, it's perhaps a bit naive, but it seemed to be completly senseless.

Today my sockapaloooza socks arrived. I was totally overwhelmed, there were not just socks but all these wonderful things:

Yes, it's right, the fabulous pomatomus socks in a wonderful combination of red and purple. And they fit. Apart from that beautiful sock yarn, funny greeting cards especially fot the knitter, a little bag (I think it's also selfmade), Girl-Scout-cakes (Jenn, how did you know, I used to be a scout as a child!) and a little wooden sheep. Even on the greeting-card there is a pattern for a poncho - a funny idea.
Do you want to know from whom I received all that stuff? A crazy person named Jenn.

Today there is a picture of my leg, not to show it's gracefulness but the Paisley pattern of my trousers. I especially like the Paisley pattern, since ever. My mum used to wear a Paisley miniskirt in the 70ties which I adored. I like this pattern in all combination of colours, the main thing is that it's Paisley. Men seem to have an advantage as you can easily find wonderful ties and even suspenders everywhere.
I myself only had two pairs of Paisley trousers so far in my life. But just now I discovered that there are even Birkenstocks in Paisley. There is still hope.

I did not have to search for a new pattern at all.
Petra recommended the pattern Hedera in the new knitty. I had already seen it but I thought it would be too difficult. But there are really only four rows which I had to translate.
I just started and it looks like that:

Hm, I think everything ist allright, but somehow it looks strange. Perhaps only one colour would be better. We'll see. I will continue knitting for now - the third row ist always really hard.

Yesterday on TV (the background was the attack in Potsdam) Mr. Schäuble was shown with the words that 'blond and blue-eyed human beings sometimes are beaten up too'.
I was horrified.

The nazis try to get into contact to our kids, e.g. on the schoolyards with the help of music. Therefore the ZSK (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Rechstextremismus & Gewalt - they are against right-wing extremism and violence) has invented the initiative "Kein Bock auf Nazis!"

Hm, I like knitting for all of them, when I know that it's a pleasure for the gifted person.
Unfortunately, the members of my family don't like socks that much. And except of Lucia - I should change this soon - they already have one pair. And I don't want to go on their nerves.
Well, my Dad is still waiting for a longer shank for his socks and he wants to have a scarf for his birthday. So I don't have a reason to complain. My mum was craving for the Kauni-scarves. And Oz still wants to have thinner socks because he always gets hot feet in the socks made of silk-wool. Perhaps cotton would be better or a thinner sock-wool. I'm still poring.

When did you begin knitting? And why?

Hm, actually I started with crochet but knitting followed soon after.
I learned it from my gandmother when I was about nine or ten years old. My grandmother was very interested in teaching these handcrafts things. I still can remember that she once mentioned that sewing a knob would be an existentiel skill. She was a dressmaker and handwork was important for her. For me it was simply fun.

Dyed Yarn

My wool-princess Kristin told me how to dye yarn. I could not show it until now because she would perhaps have discovered me.

At first it was very diffult to get the colour which is usually used for colouring easter eggs. Now I have already bought a few packages for my stock.
I took normal white Regia wool for socks and put it about an hour in vinegar:

After that I wrung it and prepared the colours. I could not stop myself and used all of them.

I must have done something wrong, perhaps there was still too much vinegar in the wool, but the wool was not totally coloured

I simply turned it around and covered the yarn with some more colour.
Then I put it into the oven and afterwards it looked like that:

You can still see a few white points, next time I will wrung out the vinegar more carefully and I will take more colour.

Very often I'm thinking of my knitting while doing to household chores. And soemtimes I sit down on the sofa and start knitting. What about you?

During the day I usually - except of the weekend - do not knit.
Knitting is reserved for the late afternoon and for the evening.
And that's no problem, I don't fell bad about that, because the things I do over the day are also fun or they are simply more important then knitting.

Where is your pain barrier in wool prices? What about prices for knitting books?

Puh, I don not have a concrete amount of Euros. Actually, I'm a little tightwad. But I can imagine that I would even pay more then usually for a yarn if it's the right one. But in this case there would have to be a certain project and I would have to be sure that I'm able to knit it. Learning a pattern with a very expensive yarn would not be my thing.
At the moment I'm not yearning for knitting books as I'm busy with knitting all the free pattern. And I think it's better not to look into these books too closely as they are surely really nice to view.

I received today.
My secret pal Wendi has sent me a great package.
She combined my favourite colours perfectly - almost everything is orange and pink:

A bag for my knitting, I already use it so that Oz does not always sit on my knitting.
Some wonderful greeting-cards, easter-pencils and a small block for the children (it's already distributed), tasty chocolate (already eaten), two very nice and soft balls of merino wool and wonderful magnets (already at the fridge).

And all things fit together perfectly.

A few days ago I finished my last secret knitting and was confronted with the problem that there was nothing to knit.
So I could not shirk and tried knitting the Birch again. Well, now I know what I did wrong last time: I tried to knit all rows with a pattern and that did not function.
This time everything worked well but I always had to stick to the instruction very closely. I simply could not imagine that I would be able to keep the pattern in mind.
So I threw the towel again.

Yes, there is a little mistake, but as it is my first one I do not have to be so strict to myself.
Perhaps I will cope with the Birch next time.

Yesterday evening we watched the echo 2006 award on tv.
I'm especially happy about 'Fettes Brot' winning the echo. The last record 'Am Wasser gebaut' is really good - we listened to it all day during our last summer holiday in the north. Fine Lyrics, big beats, astonishing socially critical and self-ironic funny - cool.
Campino's laudatio for Bob Geldorf was moving.
But, did I ever say 'Madonna forever' *klick* ?
She won two (!) awards yesterday and she was neither present - ok, she has got two children and knitting *klick* also takes time - nor able to sent a video.
I would drop everything when I would get the most important earring-award of a country. And I would even do so when I was already the biggest earring-guru in the world.
No, that's not ok. I only wanted to point that out.

Today at the hairdresser. The hairdresser was not only a hairdresser but a masseur for the hands and the head, a make-up artist and - args - an eyebrow- twitcher or shaver.
I defended my eyebrows succesfully, they are still complete. The hair is darker now, the pony is shorter and angular. I think that I will like the new hairstyle when the hair dryer style has disappeared.

If you were stranded on a lonely island with only one knitting, what would you do?
Would you finish and wear it or would you knit it again and again?

After building a comfortable hut and a nice place to knit - at least I would like to enjoy this knitting - I would finish and wear it. I would not knit it again. Besides there are surely enough things to do on a lonely island. Perhaps it would be possible to make new yarn out of plants or wild animals, which would be domesticated then.
Do you wonder why I know all these things?
I'm well versed, when I was a child I always played 'lonely island' with my dear friend A. . :)

Let me have a look in your knitting basket - what's in it?

Here is my knitting basket:

I like it very much because me grandmother made it. I store my needles, five balls of sock-wool and some other things in it. As you can see, the unfinished crochet bag covers the awful plastic bags.

My real knitting basket isn't a basket but a window seat.

This window seat is behind my regular seat on the sofa and you can easily store lots of things there. You can see the patches for the crochet blanket. Beside it one Jaywalker - the other one I am just knitting - and some journals and printed out patterns - upmost the birch-pattern, args, it's still waiting for me.
The seat is also used by other family members.

Oh yes, and the 'Werkbuch für Mädchen' (from my grandma) and a box with beads and my knitting notebook.
The green of the plant makes the scenery a bit calmer. :)

Och, it doesn't look that worse.

Days like today

fortunately don't happen so often.
An aircraft bomb from the second world war had to be deactivated today.
Everybody in a circle of 500 m had to be evacuated or had to leave the place for the time of the deactivation. That would not have been a problem but the kindergarten phoned me up because Ben suddenly had very bad belly aches. Of course, he wanted to be at home but that wasn't possible - we tried it.
Puh, that was a strange feeling.
We spent the time at the doctor and the rest of the day on the sofa.
So I had time for this:

Babysocks for a newborn child in the kindergarten. The knitting was fast und funny. These socks are so cute, it'a pitty that my own children have such large feet.
Perhaps I will knit some socks for the the longest laundry line of baby socks in the world.

Does answering the Wollschaf's question has any influence on your creative work? For example, your persistance to finish something, or your delight in buying yarn? Did you get reactions?

Of course, there are consequences when you answer those questions every week. Sometimes you have to look at themes you have never thought of before. Things get clearer in your mind, you are more energetic.
You can read the opinions of other knitters, that widens your mind.
I had a reaction to the Wollschaf: Oz is very delighted of it as it creates networks. He was very amazed when he saw how good the knitters are connected.

for the half of the Olympic Winter Games I finished the first Jaywalker sock.

When I started knitting I didn't know for whom it would be. Julia was always very sock-resistant: "Socks? Ihhh, not for me!" But she liked these Jaywalker socks and she asked if she could have them. Of course, the motherly knitting-heart was very pleased.

In the middle of the 80ties I went to Italy for vacation with three friends. With a tent and a ticket and a vague plan where we would like to go to. In Italy we discovered that we had not enough money. It was an adventorous vacation - if I think about my daughter, she is in nearly the same age as I was then, doing the same thing it's a weird feeling. But it's also a weird feeling for me if she would not do so.
On the picture you can see (from the left to the right) A. and A. and me.
The fine thing ist, that I will go to dine with them this evening. Perhaps I can persuade them to take another picture.

Yes, it seems as if it works. I'm able to knit Jaywalker socks.

At the first evening I only started and was too tired for the pattern. On Sunday I tried it again and it functioned immediately.
Until now it's really more fun than knitting 'normal' socks. This is amazing - I always thought that knitting a pattern would be a torture. I'm very happy that it worked well.

Lana Grossa Megaboots Stretch in size 39. Even with a little pattern. I liked knitting this wool, but for my feet it would be too thick.
Now the needles are free and I can start knitting when the olympic fire is lighted.

For me it's going to be a real challenge. I have to admit, that I easily stop complicated knittings when they do not function immediately.

The single 'Ich bin Ich' by 'Rosenstolz' is going to be published next Friday, they are already playing the song on the radio. I heard it with Ben in the car, we liked it and we will soon sing it along loudly.
I have just found the new video *klick* so I can hear the song and need not wait until Friday.
The video is heart-touchingly sweet. Flashback into the 70ties, I used to have such white tights too and I also turned the page of my photo-album yesterday.
Why do I always get goose pimples when I'm listening to 'Rosenstolz'?

Tätä, today I received mail from my very nice Secret Pal Wendi.

Hach, a package from America! The postman delivered it with 'Today only a package'. Today only a package, pardon, the man must be blind. A package from overseas. :)

I did not hesitate and opened it.

Wrapped im my favourite combination of colours, orange and pink. Here is the content:

American cookies, a nice magnetic blog (it already hangs at the fridge), a very nice yarn that combines my favourite colours. Wendi, how did you manage this?
The funniest thing was the american 'Labello'. It has a peppermint flavor and this makes cool lips. A really new experience.

We looked critically at the cookies and tried them. :)

The Tuesday's Knitting Question - week 06/2006

Almost all knitters (at least at the age between 35 and 45) have been knitting wildly in the 80ties. Then they stopped collectively. And then they were infected again a few years ago. How did this happen? Do you have any idea?

Öhm, I was knitting a short time before my 'real' teenage-decade, after that I had to do other things. Every now and then I was attracted by my needles. But it really started when I was searching the web for handicrafts instructions for the charity-bazaar in the kindergarten. I found all that wonderful new colourful yarn for socks, until then I only knew the plain Regia yarn. And the 'blogger-scene' was amazing.

When I asked myself today, which photo I should select this one occurred in my mind:

My grandpa Hans und I with a gum-dog.
But I have to admit that I was astonished when I saw how young I am on this photo.
I felt as if I have a concrete remambrance of the situation: we are sitting on the floor, playing, I can see the dust whirling through the sunlight.
But that's not possible, I was about a year old then, how should I be able to remember this?

Wrapping Wool

Yesterday and the day before yesterday I spent my evenings wrapping Kauni wool.
I had probably already seen strange things which look like stretched umbrellas and which should make it easier, and I had also already noticed that one should have another person who is keeping the wool. But as I do not have such a thing, and the only available arms had to go to bed, I thought - again - 'oh, this will function anyhow'.

It functioned anyhow - it only took time. And if I should see it in a positive way - it has strengthened my nerves. As I have gone through this wrapping, a pattern should not cause (nervous) difficulties.
Now I have more than three balls Kauni - yes, I have hopefully noticed the order.
Because I needed an emotional distance to the wool now, I have started knitting socks from red Lana Grossa of Megaboots Stretch for my daughter last night.
A quite well-arranged ball, I only had to remove the banderole.

A short time ago I discovered this site and I found it really fascinating.

The reason why I decided to join today ist that I'm now able to transfer the photos from my mobile phone to the pc.
So I hope it will be possible to take a picture every week.

Since yesterday I have got a 'lent' dog.
My mother's face is hurting so we decided that she has to stay at home because it's very cold outside.
I went for a walk in the forest with the dwarf Schnauzer Paula (is that the right description in english?).
Wonderful weather, the sun was quite warm.

Is there something in the fields of knitting and working with wool that you have not dared to do yet, allthough you would like to try it?

Haha, there are lots of things. Actually everything except of scarves, gloves, simple socks and a raglan sweater. Not to mention spinning. But I decided to change this.
I would like to knit a Birch with the Kidsilk Haze I got from my Wool-Fairy. There is a well explained pattern, even I should be able to unterstand it. But I will try it at first with another wool.

I have finished a thing that I can show you. It's my mother's birthday today and I gave her this scarf as a present:

It's a scarf with corners, here is the pattern. Very simpel. It's made of the wool 'Luna' by 'Rellana' which I bought a short while ago at Uta's Shop. Very nice wool.

In addition to that I finished the present for Secret Pal. That was a wonderful feeling - two things at one day. The rest of the weekend I did some crochet for the blanket.

But the best thing was, that four of our aspirants of the last week made their way into the charts.
We could slap on our backs.
